Flier
I chose to compose in the genre of a flier because this was how I first found out about GIVE Volunteers. The flier was actually similar in the information it provided such as the things that they do and where the volunteers could go along with the times of the information meetings.
Before this project I have never composed in this genre before, which made it interesting in terms of what things I should put on it.
The process that I used to compose this genre was to first think back on the flier that I personally received. Then I went to the GIVE website to gather information that I wanted to include to the flier. Then I googled GIVE Volunteers to try and find photos to use to make it more aesthetic. Finally, once I gathered everything I needed I put it all together on a Word Document.
Where is this genre “posted” in the real world?
The genre is posted in the real world by passing it out in classrooms at FSU or standing at places where a lot of students would walk around such as Strozier.
The audience that this genre reaches is the college students that have traveled before to foreign countries as those are the ones that would know what to expect. But mainly college students wanting to travel and volunteer to help develop communities with their own hands rather than simply sending money. The flier would be the hook to get the attention of the audience to come and want to learn more about what exactly GIVE does at the information meetings.
Photo Essay
I chose to compose in this genre because it was a good way to show photos that were taken of volunteers at their trips and photos that show that GIVE stays true to their mission statements.
Before composing this photo essay, I had never actually composed one before. I found certain things challenging especially since these photos were not taken by myself personally.
I actually first started with the idea that I wanted to compose in the genre of an Instagram page, but I thought it would be redundant because there already one that exists.
The process I used was to first look up GIVE’s Instagram page. From there I screenshotted photos that related to what I wanted my photo essay to say, which was that GIVE is different from most other volunteer tourist groups. Then I went to GIVE’s Instagram page on my computer to gather the URLs of each photo. Next, I made a Powerpoint with green theme to match GIVE’s colors and added the photos along with citing each one.
The genre is posted in the real world on a blog. It would be appropriate as a blog post as people interested in learning more about GIVE’s methods would be able to find it and look at the photo.
The audience that this photo essay would reach is the people on the cusp of signing up for a trip with GIVE. This group of people would want to know more about what it would be like to volunteer, see what labor they will be doing, and what type of people they would meet.
Poem
I chose to compose in this genre because I thought it would be something original and persuasive. I tried to give a brief summary of what it would be like and where the locations are to volunteer at. Also, because this was something that I did not see on GIVE’s website as a way to communicate what they are trying to do.
I had written poems before this one but no more than a handful. This poem different from poems I had written in the past as it is less abstract than any poems I had written before.
I actually started with a different genre which was a Powerpoint. I chose otherwise because I thought it would basically be the same thing as the photo essay.
I first began by reading different types of poems there were to write, and I decided that free verse would be the most applicable. Then I wrote a draft to get my thoughts written down. After that I read through it changed some words around and did this process about 4 times.
In the real world this poem would be available on the home page of the GIVE website. I feel like this would be a good way for GIVE to get people interested in a quick and simple way.
This poem would reach the audience of potential volunteers visiting the website. They might not understand that they would not be working with just other volunteers but with the native members of the communities. Also, the readers might not know where exactly they could choose to go, and this would simply get them interested to go deeper in the website.
Poem: Adventure of a Lifetime
Come travel far and wide with GIVE,
You’ll see how others live.
Help teach children English,
Help build sustainable structures alongside community members,
While Strangers quickly become friends through the language of laughter,
Bonds form with people you could not have imagined.
But it’s not all work,
Go on adventures and enjoy the outdoors.
Before you know it the 14 days will fly by
And it’ll be the end of your trip
Leaving will be the last thing you want to do.
Or will you stay a bit longer and extend your trip?
Come join us and get lost in a simple paradise, you won’t regret it
This will be an experience worth taking, you won’t forget it
